The Flaming Lips – Embryonic Preview

The Flaming Lips upcoming double-LP, Embryonic, due in September, has been billed as their “return to weird”, but I don’t buy it. When exactly was it again that they stopped being weird?  Was it when they were writing songs about anime-girls fighting girly-colored robots?  Or when they were writing songs subtitled “A Hallucination of the Christmas Skeleton Pleading With A Suicide Bomber”?  When they were landing spaceships on our stages?  They never stopped being weird; we just got used to it.

That said, the unpredictability of their distinctive psychedelic-bubblegum sound did start to become predictable in a certain hard-to-place way. So just in time here’s an intriguing, hard-to-find and weird-in-a-new-way track from their upcoming “freakout.”

  1. It’s not quite as weird as say “Shine on Sweet Jesus”, but it’s definitely a revisiting of their fuzzier sound. Their poppier sound has been a natural progression, though, and I’ve embraced it so I’m cool with whatever they decide to do (although AWWTW wasn’t so great).

    Thanks for the track.

  2. Oh I meant AWWTM. Album acronym fail.
